Why your images aren't showing up
There's no text inside a photo file. Google, ChatGPT, and voice search all read text that describes the image. Without a description, that image doesn't exist in search.
Google can't read images — it reads the description text attached to them. The more detailed the description, the higher the image ranks and the more search terms it matches.
AI search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini collect text from web pages to generate answers. Image information can only be read and cited by AI if it exists as alt text.
Google Featured Snippets and voice search extract structured text from pages. The more accurate and detailed the image description, the more likely it is to be selected as an answer.
This difference changes your visibility
Even with the same image, the number of searchable terms depends on how detailed the description is. A11Y converts every number and item in an image into text, exposing you to more search queries.
Description by a generic tool
"Quarterly revenue bar chart"
Keywords search engines read:
The actual figures in the image are missing. Won't show up in searches like "Q1 revenue comparison" at all.
Description by A11Y
"Bar chart, quarterly revenue (%): Q1 12%, Q2 9%, Q3 17%, Q4 14%."
Keywords search engines read:
With the figures as text, this appears in specific searches like "Q1 revenue trend" and "Q3 peak revenue." AI may even cite this page as a source for related questions.
